The previously indefinite period of non-contact with new members and social moratorium ended today for all but five Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Association (PHA) member chapters at the University of Maryland.
A letter from the Student Affairs office Friday highlighted outcomes and next steps following an investigation into allegations of hazing. The University placed a temporary restriction on new-member activities and other Greek Life events for all IFC and PHA chapters Mar. 1.

“We recognize that temporarily pausing select activities has had an effect on our fraternity and sorority members, particularly new members,” the letter reads. “We chose a course of action that prioritized safety and prevention, with the aim of assessing the reports we had received and preventing a significant health and safety incident from occurring.”
In partnership with InCompliance, a consulting firm with specialization in higher education, the University conducted over 150 interviews with IFC and PHA members. Anonymous sources also submitted information for review.
The letter did not disclose which five chapters remain under investigation and subject to restrictions.
The statement also included a list of steps the University plans to take in the future.
A “Fraternity and Sorority Life Working Group” will be comprised of students, staff, faculty, and alumni, and will focus on improving safety, well-being and accountability. The school also plans to review its Code of Student Conduct.
